An applicant must meet the following requirements: graduation from an accredited college or university, with a bachelor’s degree and concentration of courses in the general area of environmental health. In lieu thereof, an applicant may offer a bachelor’s degree which includes at least thirty (30) semester hours (or the equivalent) of courses in the physical and biological sciences, with a minimum of six (6) hours in the physical sciences and a minimum of ten (10) hours in the biological sciences. The physical sciences will be said to include only chemistry and physics; the biological sciences include but are not limited to biology, entomology, microbiology, zoology; and such applied sciences as animal husbandry, dairy husbandry, environmental sciences, environmental engineering, and veterinary science.

Welcome Home Act: Act 253 of the 2024 Louisiana Legislative Session, applies to applicants holding Sanitarian's licenses from other states who are applying for a Louisiana Sanitarian's license and may be eligible for Louisiana license recognition. To qualify, applicants must meet the following requirements:
-hold a current and valid license in another state with a similar scope of practice, as determined by LSBES
-has held the license for at least one year
-the other state required the applicant to pass an examination, or to meet education, training, or experience standards
-the other state holds the applicant in good standing
-does not have a disqualifying criminal record as determined by LSBES
-does not have a disciplinary action or investigation pending in another state
-pays all applicable fees
-lives in Louisiana and can provide proof of residency

Sanitarians holding temporary permits may renew online or by submitting a letter to the Board. This letter must include temporary permit number, current mailing address, and appropriate fees.
The Louisiana State Board of Examiners for Sanitarians offers examinations at least twice a year. The examination consists of a written exam and an oral exam.
Requirements for examination are: (ALL items must be submitted to the Board and approved no later than 14 days before test date)
